"In the weeks between getting my van and actually getting my van, I made lists of names for her. Some were pretty awesome, some make me cringe to think back on, but she didn't get any one of them.

Once I was behind the wheel of my sweet and yet-unnamed rig, our first trip together--just the van and me--was from my home in New Mexico up to Telluride, Colorado, via highway 550, across three mountain passes higher than 10,000 feet.

The second of those--Molas Pass--isn't the highest, but it is the most scenic. And at the top of that pass, feeling utterly euphoric, I stopped, got out, and gave her a kiss on the nose.

She got her name right there, and a tradition was born: she gets a kiss on the VW from me at the start and at the end end of every trip--and also at any pause over 10,000 feet."
